Regional Supermarket Alliance Confronts Wal-Mart

Four years ago, regional supermarkets joined together to form SUCAP (Supermercados de Centroamerica y Panama) to confront the growing competition from the U.S.-based Wal-Mart chain.

Today, it does not have the sheer number of stores as Wal-Mart but, reports the newspaper La Nacion, SUCAP is in a position to make a good showing. It has 300, of which 76 are in Costa Rica,  under management by local powerhouses Gessa and AutoMercado.

Intel was the tip of the ice berg when the company built a branch here 15 years ago. Today this country has 200 foreign firms operating. But Intel is the number one exporter in dollar terms.

Wal-Mart Faces Bribery Probe

Wal-Mart de Mexico is under intense investigation by both the Justice Dept. and Mexican authorities for alleged bribes paid to expand its operations in Mexico, reports the cable news network (CNN).

The news network also reported that investigations of corporate wrongdoing may also expand to other international companies such as John Deere, the international farm machinery firm. Local businesses are eyeing the probes, wondering if some companies here may be caught in the net.
